Gadiara: where three rivers meet
At Gadiara the Hooghly, the Rupnarayan and the Damodar come together, and the water is so wide it feels like a coast. There is a state tourist lodge, a fish lunch and the ruins of Fort Mornington across the water at Nurpur. It is 85 km from Kolkata with a slow last stretch, so this is a start-at-seven trip.

A government lodge with rooms and a dining hall. Book the meal in the morning; they cook a fixed quantity.
Fort Mornington ruins
Across the water at Nurpur, reached by a short ferry. Little survives, but the crossing itself is worth the half hour.
How to reach
Kona Expressway, Uluberia, then the Shyampur road, 85 km from central Kolkata and 99 km from Barrackpore. The last 20 km is a narrow country road, slow but tarred. Leave the city by 7am, because reaching after 11 leaves you very little time by the water.

Book the lodge meal by phone in the morning, and carry water.
The ferry to Nurpur stops in the evening and in bad weather. Do it before 3pm.

Yes, if you start early. Twelve hours door to door: three hours out, four or five hours there, three hours back. Otherwise stay the night at the lodge.
Which vehicle do you suggest for Gadiara?
A sedan is fine for four. For six or more take an MUV, because the last stretch is narrow and you will be in the car for six hours in the day.
