Bawali is a village past Budge Budge with a zamindar mansion that was a ruin and is now a restored hotel. You do not have to stay: many families drive down for lunch, walk the courtyards and the temple terrace, and come back by evening. From central Kolkata it is about 31 km, which makes it the shortest heritage trip we run.

A day visit with a meal
Day guests are usually taken with a booked meal, so call ahead rather than arriving at the gate. A Bengali lunch and the run of the grounds is the normal arrangement.
The village around it
Old temples, ponds and lanes worth a slow half hour on foot. Nothing organised, which is what keeps it pleasant.
How to reach
By car through Behala and Budge Budge, about 31 km from central Kolkata and 54 km from Barrackpore, roughly an hour and a half from the city. The last two kilometres are a village road, narrow but tarred. There is no useful train option, and the local transport from Budge Budge station is slow, so this is a car trip.
