Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary, Narendrapur
People fly to another state for a bird walk and forget that there is a proper sanctuary 20 km from Esplanade. Kayaler Bagan, now the Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary, is a small patch of old orchard and forest at Narendrapur with shaded paths, a lot of resident birds and winter visitors. It is a half day, not a holiday, and that is exactly its use.

Winter birds
From November the migratory birds arrive and local birders come with cameras. Go at opening time; by 9am the light is flat and the birds are quiet.
What is not there
No restaurant, no picnic ground, no cooking, no loudspeaker. Carry water and a packed breakfast, and eat it outside the gate.
How to reach
By car it is 20 km from central Kolkata down the Sonarpur or Narendrapur road, about 45 minutes early in the morning and up to an hour and a half after 9am. From Barrackpore it is 41 km, so leave by 6.30am. There is parking outside the gate. Ask us for the current opening hours and weekly closing day when you book, because these change.
