Diamond Harbour is where the Hooghly turns south and becomes so wide that the far bank disappears. It is 48 km from central Kolkata on a good road, which makes it the day trip we suggest most often for families with small children or elderly parents: you are there in under two hours, and back before dark without anyone getting tired.

Remains of a Portuguese era fort by the water, visible properly only when the tide is out. Ask a local for the tide time; it changes daily.
A riverside fort turned hotel and a ferry to Kukrahati across the water. Worth adding for an hour if you have started early.
Straight down Diamond Harbour Road from the city, 48 km, or 71 km from Barrackpore. The road is good all the way. The local train from Sealdah also runs here, but with a family the car makes more sense because the riverfront, the fort side and Raichak are a few kilometres apart. From the airport it is a two to two and a half hour drive.

Small things that decide whether the day is good or tiring.
Eat before 1.30pm. The riverside places cook a fixed amount and stop.
Sunday is crowded. A weekday gives you the same river with a tenth of the people.
Do not go down to the water on the slippery steps, especially with children.
Road distances and drive times here are checked on road routing data and then widened for real traffic. Timings, ferry hours and entry rules change with the season, so ask us the day before you go and we will tell you what the road is like that week.
