Best time to visit Darjeeling, month by month
Darjeeling is about 639 km from Kolkata, so the month you pick matters more than in a day trip. Two seasons work: October to early December for the clearest Kanchenjunga views, and March to May for pleasant weather and flowers. Everything else has a catch, and we would rather tell you before you book.

What to fit in
Late December and January
Very cold, sometimes snow at the higher points, and the Christmas and New Year week is packed. Book weeks ahead if you want these dates.
March to May
Warmest and busiest. Rhododendron and magnolia in bloom, but haze can hide the mountain for days.
June to September
Heavy rain and landslide season on the hill roads. Cheapest and greenest, but plans break. Keep a spare day if you must travel now.
How we plan the trip
Night train from Sealdah to New Jalpaiguri or a flight to Bagdogra, our car from your gate to the station or airport, and a car at the other end for the hill drive, the sightseeing days, Mirik or Kurseong on the way, and the drop back. Four nights is comfortable, three is tight, and if you want to drive the whole 639 km we do it with two drivers and a halt at Siliguri.

Nobody can promise a Kanchenjunga view. October and November give you the best chance, that is all.
Book trains for April, May, October and Christmas week as early as the booking opens.
On hill roads, listen to the driver about timing. Coming down after dark in rain is not worth it.
Road distances and drive times here are checked on road routing data and then widened for real traffic. Timings, ferry hours and entry rules change with the season, so ask us the day before you go and we will tell you what the road is like that week.

Does it snow in Darjeeling?
Sometimes, at the higher points in late December and January, but it is not certain in any year. If snow is the whole reason for the trip, Sandakphu or Sikkim are better bets, and we will plan for those.
How many days should we keep for Darjeeling?
Four nights with the train, five if you drive. That gives you two full days in Darjeeling plus Mirik or Kurseong without rushing.
